    1. Have you ever read the adult book How I Became a Famous Novelist Bear with me for a second here, I know what I m doing You see, in the title the author decides that he wants to become a New York Times bestseller In the course of his quest he runs across a variety of different authors who embody a variety of different types of novels His own aunt decides she wants to be a children s author and sets about doing so by writing a work of historical middle grade fiction The book is about a girl living [...]

    2. An interesting story about slaves who left English owned Florida for Spanish Florida in the mid 1700s, where they were freed in exchange for guarding the border Geared toward upper elementary middle school age readers.

    3. I first learned about Fort Mose from a historical novel called Pirates of Savannah by Tarrin Lupo I was intrigued by Lupo s brief reference to Fort Mose and wanted to know It was a settlement of escaped slaves in 18th century Spanish Florida that was the first community of free African Americans in the United States This was not something I d ever seen in history books I am happy to be posting about this on Fourth of July because I think it s patriotic to heighten awareness of aspects of Americ [...]

    4. The Other Side of Free by Krista Russell.5 Rating 4.5 5I was drawn to The Other Side of Free, a fictitious novel based on a historical record It tells the story of a 13 year old boy, Jem who flees from the despicable treatment of his Master, with the help of Aunt Winnie, not a blood relative, and Phaedra He finds himself in Fort Mose, which is in the hands of the Spanish forces the fort was built to protect St Augustine from the English.I have never heard of Fort Mose, not being an American but [...]

    5. Read this via an ARC from NetGalley where the title is The Other Side of Free.An interesting look at a little written about piece of history the first free African settlement in what is now the United States Promised asylum by the Spanish king, slaves in the English colonies made their way South to St Augustine, FL to live at Fort Mose They swore an oath of loyalty to the Spanish king and swore to be the most cruel enemies to the English the men fulfilling that promise by serving in the militia [...]

    6. It s the 1700s and Jem is a slave in the south When his auntie realizes that the slave owner and his children are abusing and torturing Jem over and over and are eventually going to Kill him she knows he has to leave After hearing of a colony of slaves who are living in Florida under the rule of Spain she bargains with a slave woman to take Jem with her when she runs away Jem goes to live in Florida at a fort occupied by runaway slaves who ve taken an oath to stand between the Spanish people in [...]

    7. I like historical fiction I have learned about some times, locations, and events because a book I read made me want to find out about the subject This book is one of those I had not been aware of the free African settlements in Florida before reading this book I have now started learning about them. Now, I know that an adult saying they like a book for intermediate middle grade readers because they learned from it isn t always going to be the most inspiring note to these readers However, the st [...]

    8. Read my full review bit 19Sfle1My opinion I felt this was a good storyline, but a tad difficult to follow and slow paced On that note, THE HISTORY IN THIS BOOK WAS UNBELIEVABLE It contained very little known facts about the history of the United States wrapped up in an interesting storyline I found I really wasn t connected as much as I wanted to be to the main character, Jem, which was really sad to me I just felt all of the characters could have been developed much strongly than they were.On [...]

    9. I liked that she approached a new part of history that doesn t get treated in literary endeavors much I actually really liked the character of Jem But it just felt like the author was trying too hard It was as if she really, really wanted a Newbery So, in the end, the metaphors and symbols felt manufactured and forced not natural and inspiring , and the historical treatment felt well researched, but not like she had actually immersed herself mentally into the time period It kind of came off like [...]

    10. Afraid I didn t like this WAW possibility too much, mostly because I didn t like the two main characters Jem and Phaedra Phaedra promises to take Jem to freedom for Aunt Winnie who has raised him, but Phaedra is quite mean and cranky They leave Charles Town, SC and make it to Mosey which is a Spanish Fort for freed slaves in Florida There Jem saves a baby owl who has been thrown out of its nest by some crows As he tries to train the owl, Omen, he makes some stupid mistakes at the fort and people [...]

    11. gr 4 6 246pgs1739 Fort Mose, Florida 13 year old Jem wants to join the militia along with the other freed slaves He s tired of all the other adults treating him like a child and ordering him around When there is a slave rebellion in American colonies, the English accuse the Spanish of hiding escaped slaves who participated in the revolt and they attack Fort Mose An interesting setting.

    12. I enjoyed this book I don t usually read historical fiction, but this book kept my interest all the way through Based on a true account, this story gives a picture that we don t often hear about in school Jem, a young boy attempting to escape slavery in 1739, has allied with the Spanish in St Augustine to fight against the English A very interesting and unique perspective, and very well written I think this book would be best for a middle school audience.

    13. A boy and his owl Lol Decent Different A young African American boy who is newly freed travels in Florida and stays at a settlement in the 1700s Rich in history that is interesting for a change The book really picks up after page 150 or so when the two world powers at the time, the English and the Spanish, are threatening war against each other He grows over the course of the book A good adventure book for younger boys He was superstitious for a while, which was quite annoying.

    14. So few know the significance and importance of Fort Mose I m thrilled that this settlement is gaining increased recognition Another book, in a similar vein I would recommend is Copper Sun by Sharon Draper.

    15. An otherwise untold aspect of history I enjoyed it because I am fascinated by the subject matter, but I found the pacing was a bit uneven and things dragged a bit at times History lovers will appreciate Jem s story, but other readers might not be taken by the slower pace.
