    6. This was dePaola s first chapter book Our family has read a number of his picture books, both the fiction and the non fiction, and we absolutely loved reading about his magical childhood Now and then he would mention certain happenings that were the focus of his shorter pictures books, which was fun to finally read them in context He has such vivid memories and tells them in a very entertaining way I would say that, to my children, he is almost family This book in particular has made me want to [...]

    11. Very enjoyable reading his first chapter book from the man known for his illustrations of very short children s books He was one of the first illustrators I noticed when reading to my young children The book includes drama, light hearted moments that had better draw at least a chuckle, family history, and There are nice illustrations throughout, but the gems are the small silhouettes that start and conclude each chapter DePaola s final note is an added benefit because it allows us to hear from [...]

    12. Enjoyable book I would recommend this book to parents or grandparents as an appropriate book to read with children who will be moving into a new home I would also recommend reading the book in sections over the span of a few days and discussing each challenge the family faces as their home is being built and how friends and family aid the dePaola Family as problems arise I think it is a lovely story.

    13. Read on recommendation of my youngest daughter age 7 who begged me to buy this book after reading it at school Being a lifelong fan of Tomie DePaola s art and illustrated picture books, I was curious about what to expect with his first chapter book 26 Fairmont Avenue is a sweet reflection of Tomie s childhood, with some really funny memories thrown in Thoroughly enjoyed

    14. This delightful memoir covers a young Tomie DePaola s experiences with a hurricane, moving into a new house, and starting kindergarten Favorite part by far when they go see Snow White in the movie theater and Tomie just CAN T BELIEVE that Walt Disney didn t read the book.

    15. A quick 17 minute read that is an enjoyable story DePaola tells of a few of his childhood years which leads to six books didn t know he had completed a series Would be a great read aloud for any child over five.

    16. As a child, Tomie did not confine himself to strict gender roles took tap dancing, played female roles or dressed as female characters for Halloween A good talking point about gender expectations.

    17. Adorable middle school aged book Could recommend for either boy to read, my favorite part was with the boy and the umbrella

    24. I should probably preface this review by saying that growing up, Tomie dePaola was one of my very favorite authors It was The Clown of God that made me fall in love with his work, though I read Strega Nona first I don t know how old I was when I first read it, but I was fairly young The simplicity of the language, the quotidien beauty of the illustrations, and the fairy tale like story combined to create a book that has lasted with me into adulthood, and that remains one of my favorite picture b [...]

    25. This memoir by Tomie de Paola, winner of the Laura Ingalls Wilder award for his lifetime contribution to childrens literature, has a much younger feel than most Newberry books The stories of de Paolas kindergarten and early elementary years remind me of the simplicity of presenting another era through the eyes of a child in Wilders books The incidents are pretty ordinary, but new readers will identify with the concerns of a small child, like birthdays and new babies The author was born in 1934 s [...]
